Dental Crowns in Plymouth

Dental crowns are a common type of restoration used for the repair of teeth that are cracked, chipped or decayed. A crown can be thought of as a type of “cap” fitted into place over a tooth that needs strengthening. Crowns are typically used to reshape broken teeth, enhance the appearance of teeth, or to cover a dental implant. They are also used to cover teeth that require large dental fillings.

Dental Crown Materials

Dental crowns are available in a wide range of materials, including gold, metallic alloys, porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), and ceramic.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns are the most popular type of dental crowns placed by dentists. They can be shaded to match the color of your surrounding teeth and are reasonably priced. PFM crowns are most commonly used for rear teeth, as their metal base is extremely strong and has the ability to withstand the force placed upon back teeth when chewing or biting. One drawback of PFM crowns is that the metal base can become visible in full, natural sunlight. This is another reason why PFM crowns are typically used for rear teeth that are less visible.

Full Porcelain and Ceramic

Full porcelain or ceramic make a great choice for anyone looking for a natural appearance, as well as for those with metal allergies. This type is most commonly used for the front teeth due to the superior natural appearance. One drawback of porcelain and ceramic crowns is that they lack the strength of PFM crowns. They are also normally more expensive and susceptible to cracking and chipping. For this reason, they are not commonly placed on rear teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

If you are looking for the strongest type of dental crown, you will want a zirconia dental crown. Although they are the most expensive type of crown, zirconia crowns are virtually indestructible and appropriate for use on either front or rear teeth.  One drawback of zirconia crowns is that they are so strong that they can cause premature wear on teeth that they come into contact with.

Dental Crowns FAQ

Here are a few frequently asked questions about dental crowns:

What is the process of receiving a dental crown?

Your dentist would begin by preparing your tooth by removing some of its structure to make room for your crown. You would typically be provided with local anesthesia during this part of the treatment so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure.  If necessary, your dentist will create an impression of the tooth receiving the crown and send it to a dental laboratory. The dental lab will custom-craft your dental crown and return it to your dentist. Once your crown is ready, you will return for a follow-up appointment to have it placed. Your dentist will carefully check the crown to ensure that it is the appropriate fit and color. If everything checks out, your dentist will then permanently cement your new dental crown into place.

What is a CEREC same-day dental crown?

Some dentists offer CEREC same-day crowns for patients with busy lifestyles. If available, you can have your crown placed in only one appointment.

How can I make my new dental crown last?

A dental crown can last up to 15 years or more if cared for properly. To ensure that your new crown lasts as long as possible, maintain your oral hygiene habits at home. Brush at least twice daily and floss your teeth each day. You should also keep up with your routine dental exam and cleaning appointments.
