Professional Dental Cleaning

Brushing and flossing daily is a critical part of maintaining good oral health. However it is also important to get a dental exam twice a year. A dentist needs to check for problems with a visual exam and X-Rays. You may not notice any issues, however there may be hidden dental problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Dental Cleaning includes removing plaque and then brushing and polishing the teeth.

When Should I Schedule Professional Dental Cleaning?

You should schedule a professional dental cleaning with Dr. Suede at Great Lake Smiles every 6 months. If it has been over 6 months since your last dental exam and cleaning, contact Great Lakes Smiles, dental office in Plymouth for an appointment.

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease treatment options depend on the stage of the disease. Nonsurgical procedures are available, which will control bacterial growth. Surgery is also an option to restore supportive tissues. Dr. Suede in the Great Lakes will identify the stage of gum disease and the appropriate course of treatment.

What Should I Expect from Gum Disease Treatment?

A professional dental cleaning may be all that is needed if your gum disease is in the initial stages. Removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line will stop the disease from progressing.

Scaling and root planning is a deep-cleaning, non-surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. This procedure removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line and smooths any roughness on the teeth. This removes bacteria and provides a clean surface for teeth to reattach.

There are multiple surgical options. Those include:

  • Flap surgery/pocket reduction surgery
  • Bone grafts
  • Soft tissue grafts
  • Guided tissue regeneration
  • Bone surgery

Surgery occurs when the tissue around the teeth is unhealthy. GL Smiles always chooses the least invasive approach possible to treat gum disease.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are great for decreasing the chances of getting cavities. It’s a preventative measure that adults and children get if they have deep pits or grooves in their molars.

Why Dentists and Patients Love Dental Sealants

Dental sealants save time and money because they prevent bacteria from growing deeper inside the molars. Some people have deeper crevices in their molars than others do, so filling those crevices with sealants is a great way to keep them free from bacteria and decay. Patients still have to brush and floss daily and seek routine dental care, but they are at reduced risk of getting cavities in their molars than they would be without sealants.

About the Procedure

It only takes a single visit to place dental sealants. Dr. Suede will first remove plaque and any debris in the affected tooth with a brush and pumice paste. She will then dry the tooth and place the resin-based sealant with a small syringe. Finally, Dr. Suede will add an etching material onto the tooth for about 15 seconds.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid substance that can prevent cavities. This solution is made of silver, water, fluoride and ammonia. SDF was FDA approved in 2014.

How Do Dentists Use SDF?

Dr. Rahaf Suede will apply SDF directly to the surface of the teeth. She will use cotton or gauze and a vacuum suction tool to keep teeth dry. She will then apply the solution to affected teeth, specifically if a cavity may be forming or have already formed.

Dentists may apply SDF on healthy teeth as well, especially if a patient is susceptible to cavities. Research has found that SDF is effective in preventing cavities as much as it is in treating them.

How Do I Know I Need SDF?

The only way to know if you need SDF is to speak to a dentist near you. Dr. Suede at GL Smiles will perform a dental exam, cleaning and then recommend SDF if it is needed to improve or maintain good oral health.

At Great Lakes Smile Dental Office in Plymouth, we are a proud user of SDF. We believe in its effects and would love to see if you could benefit from it. Schedule a dental appointment with Dr. Rahaf Suede, DDS today Call (734) 459-9360

Dental Fillings

After an oral examination, Dr. Rahaf Suede may recommend that you do a dental filling procedure to repair any damaged and affected teeth. Dental fillings can help protect teeth and prevent progression of cavities.

What Is a Dental Filling?

Dental fillings are important if a tooth has been affected with decay or has been chipped, if it was caused by a cavity or chipping of the teeth. Dr. Suede may use dental fillings to restore the affected tooth to healthy shape and function.

Dr. Suede uses tooth colored filling material that is metal and BPA free.

What Should I Expect from a Dental Filling Procedure?

Dental Fillings require one simple dentist visit. Dr. Suede at Great Lakes Smiles Dentistry in Plymouth will first remove any decayed area of the tooth. She will then clean it to remove any leftover decay and bacteria. Then Dr. Suede will fill the affected area with the filling material and shape it to fit your tooth. Finally, Dr. Suede will harden the filling to give it strength and set it in place.

Dental Bridges

Tooth loss may affect the shape of your face and bite alignment. A bridge is an effective way to restore your bite alignment and keep the natural shape of your face.

Why Do Patients Need Dental Bridges?

Tooth loss results in empty spaces, which may affect the placement of teeth near the lost tooth. This can impact your bite alignment and cause issues for the surrounding teeth and jaw. Another consequence of a missing tooth is that bone may shrink, which can change the appearance of the lips and cheeks.

What Should I Expect with Dental Bridges?

There are two types of dental bridges:

  • Fixed bridge: This uses the existing teeth to hold the bridge in place.
  • Implant-supported bridge: This is a surgically-placed implant that anchors to the jaw.

Choosing the right type of bridge depends on several factors. After an examination and assessment, Dr. Suede will provide you with the necessary information to make a decision.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants replace the entire tooth from root to crown. This is a solution for a missing tooth providing a highly stable and durable tooth replacement. Dr. Rahaf Suede DDS is a family dentist at Great Lakes Smiles who specializes in restoring dental implants.

Dental implants can also be used to replace not only a missing tooth but also several missing teeth or a complete arches of teeth. The dental implant post, which is a screw made of titanium, is surgically placed in the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. After the healing period, Dr. Suede will place the tooth replacement that fits on top of the implant post.
Depending on which teeth are missing and your personal dental needs, your implant restoration might be a dental crown, dental bridge, or a complete or partial denture. Each dental implant restoration is custom made to fit your smile comfortably and aesthetically.

Tooth Extractions

Dr. Rahaf Suede, DDS always try to save your natural teeth, but sometimes, an extraction is necessary. If it is the last resort and there is no other option, don’t worry, it will not be painful. it really does not hurt. You may feel pressure, but no pain.

When Would I need a Tooth Extraction?

Dr. Suede will consider tooth extractions for the possible reasons:

  • Crowded mouth Some people may have teeth that are larger than the spaces allotted for them, so pulling a tooth will let the teeth fit in the mouth better.
  • Infection or risk of infection Tooth decay is another reason for tooth extraction. A root canal may be attempted first to see if it’s possible to remove the decay, but if that or antibiotics don’t cure the infection, an extraction is necessary.
The same goes for people who may be suffering from decay and they have a weakened immune system. Infection can lead to serious medical problems, so extraction is the best choice for those people.
  • Periodontal disease Periodontal disease or often known as gum disease weakens a tooth to the point it becomes loose. Removing the tooth at this point is the only option.

Can I Have a Severely Damaged Tooth Pulled?

Dr. Rahaf Suede, DDS will attempt to repair and restore your tooth, but, if the tooth can’t be restored, our dentist can extract it for you. After your extraction, Dr. Suede will explain your choices for replacing the tooth with either an implant or a dental bridge.

How Long Does It Take To Heal From Tooth Extraction?

Generally within a week, the hole in your mouth starts to heal. Dental Extraction site closes within several days, however, molar extraction takes longer to heal, typically, anywhere from two weeks to a month.

Are Baby Teeth Extractions Ever Necessary?

If your child has extensive decay and a root canal isn’t possible, our dentist will extract the tooth and stop your child’s pain. Dr. Suede may also pull a baby tooth if the tooth is damaged from trauma and he or she cannot save it.

Contact Dental Office for Tooth Extractions

If you need an extraction or you’re not sure, contact our Great Lakes Smile Dental office near you in Plymouth. Dr. Rahaf Suede, DDS would be happy to perform a thorough dental exam to identify whether extraction or another treatment method is best.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting may be needed during periodontal surgery. Bone grafts can help regenerate bone from a lost tooth. The goal of bone grafting is to restore damaged bone tissue resulting from gum disease.

How is Bone Grafting Performed?

The periodontist folds part of the gum back and cleans out any infected gum tissue. The bone graft is then placed, which over time stimulates bone growth.

For patients who have a tooth missing, a metal post can be placed in the jawbone, and a bone graft will form a stable base. It can take several months for the implant to be placed, as the bone needs time to regenerate.

What Are the Types of Bone Grafts?

There are different types of bone grafts:

  • Autograft: This graft uses your own bone from your hip or the back of your jaw.
  • Allograft: This bone is sourced from another person.
  • Xenograft: The bone is taken from an animal, such as a cow.
  • Alloplasty: The bone is made from synthetic material, containing calcium, phosphorus and hydroxylapatite.

Learn More About Bone Grafting

Not everyone may need bone grafting if they suffer from gum disease. It depends on the damage the disease has caused.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canals can usually prevent the need for extraction, enabling you to continue using and enjoying your natural teeth. It can repair and save a decayed or infected tooth. Dr. Suede provides Root Canal Treatment at Great Lakes Smile in Plymouth, Michigan.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

The root canal procedure removes the nerve and pulp of the tooth, then cleans and seals it. Without this procedure, the tooth may become severely infected and an abscess may form.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

A patient may need a root canal if the nerve and pulp becomes infected or damaged because of decay that has reached the center of the tooth. This can happen because a cavity has been left untreated, there’s a crack in the tooth, or it has been otherwise compromised.

What Should I Expect with a Root Canal Procedure?

A root canal can take more than one office visit. Dr. Suede will take an x-ray of the tooth to see if the infection has affected the surrounding bone. She will apply local anesthesia to the area. Dr. Suede will also place rubber dam to keep the tooth completely dry. She will drill a hole into the tooth and remove any decay and debris with a file. Finally, Dr. Suede will seal the tooth. For infections, Dr. Suede will put medication inside of the tooth to treat it.

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being a painful treatment. In reality, however, root canal treatment can often be completed with minimal discomfort thanks to advanced techniques, tools and anesthesia. Dr. Suede will provide you with a pleasant and comfortable experience each time you visit her office.
